Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper to create the hamburger steak mixture.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties and let them rest while you prepare the gravy base.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat and brown the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until they develop a golden crust. Remove the patties and set aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onions in butter until softened. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes to form a roux. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream until the mixture is smooth. Add garlic powder and stir to combine.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet tightly and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then, remove the cover and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld before serving.

Notes

  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend helps ensure the patties stay juicy and flavorful.
  • You can substitute heavy cream with half-and-half for a lighter gravy, though it will be less rich.
  • Use an oven-safe skillet or transfer to a baking dish before baking.
  • Breadcrumbs can be seasoned or plain, adjust salt accordingly.
  • Resting the casserole after baking helps the gravy thicken slightly for better texture.
