Ingredients

Scale

Apple Preparation

  • 2 medium apples
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Water (enough to immerse apples)
  • Cinnamon, as needed

Puff Pastry and Filling

  • 1 puff pastry sheet
  • 3 tbsp apricot preserve (or any other preserve)
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Slice the apples: Cut each apple in half and remove the core. Lay the halves flat on the work surface and cut into thin slices using a sharp knife.
  2. Cook the apple slices: Place the apple slices in a microwave-safe bowl and add enough water to cover them. Add lemon juice and stir gently. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until the apples are soft but still hold their shape, so they’re easy to work with.
  3. Thaw and roll puff pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheet according to package instructions. Roll it out to approximately 18 inches in length.
  4. Divide the pastry: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 6 equal strips.
  5. Prepare the apricot glaze: In a small bowl, mix the apricot preserve with 2 tablespoons of water to create a thin glaze.
  6. Apply glaze and layer apples: Working with one strip at a time, spread a thin layer of apricot glaze over the pastry. Place apple slices along one side of the strip with the skin side facing outward, overlapping slightly.
  7. Dust with cinnamon and fold: Sprinkle cinnamon over the apples, then fold the other half of the pastry strip over the apple slices.
  8. Roll into roses: Starting from one side, gently roll the pastry strip into a spiral, similar to a jelly roll, being careful not to roll too tightly.
  9. Place in muffin tin: Lightly grease a muffin tin and place each rolled pastry into a separate cup. Repeat with remaining strips and apple slices.
  10. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the apple roses for 25 to 35 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Serve: Allow the apple roses to rest in the muffin tin for 5 minutes before carefully removing them. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm, optionally accompanied by ice cream.

Notes

  • Microwave time may vary depending on apple thickness and microwave wattage; adjust accordingly.
  • Using different fruit preserves can alter the flavor profile.
  • Serve warm for best texture and flavor.
  • Ensure not to roll the pastry strips too tightly to prevent breaking during baking.
