Ingredients

Scale

Layered Base

  • 1 (16-ounce) can refried beans
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1/4 cup taco sauce

Guacamole Layer

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch garlic powder

Sour Cream Layer

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 12 tablespoons milk (to thin sour cream)

Toppings

  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped ripe tomatoes
  • 1 green onion, thinly sliced

Decoration

  • Plastic spider ring (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bean layer: In a bowl, combine the refried beans, taco seasoning, and taco sauce. Warm slightly to soften and blend the flavors.
  2. Layer the beans: Spread the seasoned bean mixture evenly in the bottom of a glass pie plate to create the base of the dip.
  3. Make the guacamole: Mash the ripe avocado with lime juice, salt, and garlic powder until smooth. Spread this guacamole layer gently and evenly over the bean layer.
  4. Prepare the sour cream: In a small bowl, thin the sour cream with 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk until it reaches a smooth, pourable consistency. Transfer this mixture to a squeeze bottle or a zip-top bag with a corner cut off for piping.
  5. Create the spider web pattern: Pipe 3 to 4 concentric circles of the thinned sour cream over the guacamole layer. Using a toothpick, drag lines from the center of the circles outward to form the spider web design.
  6. Add toppings: Sprinkle sliced black olives, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped tomatoes, and thinly sliced green onions evenly around the edges of the dip.
  7. Decorate: Place a plastic spider ring in the center of the spider web for a festive touch. Remember to remove it before serving and eating.
  8. Serve: Present the dip immediately with an assortment of tortilla chips and vegetable dippers for enjoying this spooky and delicious appetizer.

Notes

  • Use ripe avocados for a creamy guacamole texture.
  • If you don’t have a squeeze bottle, use a zip-top bag with a small cut in the corner to pipe sour cream.
  • Remove the plastic spider ring before eating to avoid choking hazards.
  • Can be prepared a few hours ahead; cover tightly and refrigerate until serving.
  • For a spicier version, add some chopped jalapeños to the bean layer or guacamole.
